Anaerobic digestion of pig manure is the oldest biogas practice in the country, from backyard digesters that light a kitchen to covered lagoons at commercial farms that run an engine. The industry was cut back by African swine fever after 2019 and has been rebuilding since, with larger, more concentrated farms. Those are the farms at which a digester is a plant rather than a gesture, and the difference is scale.

What the manure gives
A grower pig produces a few kilograms of manure and urine a day, and a commercial farm flushes it with water into a slurry of two to five percent solids. Digested at ambient temperature, that slurry gives a gas of about 60% methane, in a quantity that depends on the herd, the diet and the temperature. A farm of a few thousand head supports an engine of a few hundred kilowatts; a farm of a few hundred head supports a burner.
The three decisions
Water. Flush systems dilute the slurry and enlarge the tank. A scraper system or a reduced flush cuts the digester volume by half or more.
Temperature. A Philippine digester runs warm without heating, which is the country's one structural advantage in biogas.
The gas. An engine needs a load to serve, day and night; a burner needs a boiler or a dryer. A farm with a feed mill has the load. A farm without one flares.
The covered lagoon and the tank
The covered lagoon is cheap and slow, holds the slurry for months, and is hard to control. A tank digester holds it for weeks, is mixed and monitored, and gives more gas from the same manure. The choice is about the value of the gas: where it replaces bought fuel or power, the tank pays for its control; where it is flared, the lagoon is enough.
Why the digester is often leased
A farm's business is pigs. A digester is a process plant with a chemistry to manage, and the farms that run them well have either hired the skill or contracted it. That is the reason we build and operate digesters under a lease rather than selling them: the plant is only worth what it produces, and producing it is a job.
